The Central Visayas Regional Development Council (RDC) is requesting the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) to include lung cancer in its Case Type Z Benefits Package.

During its 4th Quarter Full Council meeting on 03 December 2021, the RDC, through the Social Development Committee (SDC), passed a resolution requesting PhilHealth to include the lung cancer under the Case Type Z benefits package. The inclusion is consistent with the National Integrated Cancer Control Act which mandates PhilHealth to expand its benefit packages for all types and stages of cancer. It is also aligned with the objectives of the Universal Health Care Act and Philippine Development Plan of ensuring a responsive and resilient health care system and of sustaining equitable financing of nutrition and health.

PhilHealth Circular No.029 (s.2012) added Case Type Z under its classification of illnesses to improve and expand the benefits for economically and medically catastrophic primary disease conditions. The cancers identified under the Z Package are acute lymphocytic leukemia, breast, prostate, cervical, colon and rectum. However, several statistics showed that lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer-related deaths in males and number two in females. It is also the number two most common cancer in terms of new cases for both males and females in the Philippines.
